Whether you love it or hate, ironing seems to be an unescapable chore. Each week the pile seems to grow and grow until it’s unavoidable. Here are a few tips on how to reduce the mountain.

Start with the wash - when organising your clothes to be washed, not only should you sort by colours but also by the fabric content and weight. The main aim is to wash heavier fabrics separately from lighter fabrics. Heavier fabrics such as denim can press onto lighter fabrics such as cotton causing them to crush and become wrinkled, making them more of a challenge to iron.

It is also important not to over load your washing machine. The more clothes that are jammed in, the less space they have to spin. This results in the clothes not properly washing and being crushed and compacted during the wash cycle.

Hang it out to dry – use plastic hangers to hang wet clothes immediately after washing. This will allow the wrinkles to drop out while drying and reduces the need for ironing. If using a dryer, it is important to ensure you don’t over dry clothing. Fabric with all moisture removed encourages wrinkling and creases. The best way to avoid this is to stop the drying cycle a few minutes before the end. Clothing should then be immediately folded; the warmth from the dryer will reduce the likelihood of creasing occurring.

Steam the creases away –   by hanging clothing on plastic hangers in the bathroom while you shower. If enough steam is generated, the creases and wrinkles will drop out. Alternatively, invest in a garment steamer. Steamers are easy to use and leave clothes with a clean crisp look in a fraction of the time it takes to iron.

By following these simple tips, ironing should became a breeze!
