Queen Victoria Market

    A couple of weeks ago, Gina and I were in Melbourne with a few hours to spare on Saturday morning. We knew exactly where we were going – the Queen Victoria Market.

    Neither of us have been before, but heard so many great things, so we went in with high expectations. Let me say – we were not disappointed. I loved the different precincts in the market – deli hall, meat hall, fruit & vegetables, and lots of bargains. I want such a market right next to my place, back in Sydney.

    So rather than me gush over how much we enjoyed our selves, I’m going to visually share the goodies we found and experienced. Our morning started by catching a tram to the markets.

    It was no surprise that we wandered into the deli first and straight for the cheese stands. I mean who could resist? My favourite on the day was a creamy cheese with layers of walnuts… yum.


    The hanging meat at the stands in the meat hall reminded me so much of the markets all over Europe.


    Now you might think the fish market would smell – well okay, it did, but it didn’t bother me. My first job ever was at a fish market, so I guess I’m more tolerant of the smell. Can’t say the same for Gina. :)


    We then headed into the fruit & vegetable hall, where the bounty was plentiful, and the service always came with a smile.


    I was first introduced to okra, or lady fingers, when I was in India a few years ago. Ever since I’ve been adding them to my curries and stir-frys. Okra are very rich in fibre but low in calories. Even my hubby likes them now – that’s a huge thing:)


    Now if you’re wondering what that turnip look-a-like vegetable is at the front of the photo… it’s jicama. A root vegetable, similar in looks to a raw potato with white flesh. It has a slightly sweet and nutty taste and can be eaten both raw and cooked. Shredded raw, they are great in salads, but also make a wonderful hash brown when cooked.


    After a wonderful few hours, Gina and I needed a coffee break, so we made our way toward the bakeries. I mean that’s where anyone goes when they take a break. Right?


    Gina went for the cannoli and I went for the napoleon slice – it reminded me of a desert I grew up eating – cremesh. Of course we shared… who doesn’t share such scrumptious deserts?


    Next time I’d down in Melbourne, I’ll be paying the markets another visit.

    Friday:        6am – 5pm (general merchandise to 4pm)


    Saturday:  6am – 3pm
