In a medium frypan, heat the oil over a low heat for 2 minutes. Add the onion and garlic and sauté for 5 minutes or until clear.
Add the taco seasoning and the tomato paste; stir until it has formed a thick even paste.
Add the tomatoes and kidney beans. Simmer over a low heat for 5 minutes, stirring regularly.
Layer the base of a deep crockery dish (20cm wide) with tortillas and top with bean mixture. Sprinkle cheese over the top and place into the oven for 10 minutes.
