Hunting Them Easter Eggs Down

When I was young, Easter egg hunts were not organised very well in my family. It was all about collecting the greatest number of chocolate eggs, so speed was of the essence. This in hindsight made little sense since mum used to split the eggs evenly between the kids after the hunt. But it did give us bragging rights if we found the most eggs.

    • Create themed invitations in the shape of an egg or with a picture of an Easter bunny and ask the kids to help with the colouring in and decoration
    • Decide what will be ‘hunted’. A mix of miniature and larger hunting eggs is ideal, together with a few hard boiled eggs that can be decorated
    • Everyone can decorate their own basket before the hunt
    • Assign each child with a colour to collect and make sure everyone receives their own basket to fill
    • Decorate the garden with an Easter theme using bunnies and pastel balloons
    • Draw a treasure map of your yard with egg spots marked with an X for the younger children
    • Provide Easter themed snacks such as cake pops in the shape of an Easter egg, carrot sticks, bunny cupcakes or hot cross bun
    • For the kid in all of us, try a night egg hunt. Everyone participating receives a basket and flashlight

There is such a thing as too much chocolate, and so it’s great to also have some savoury treats. Boiled eggs in festive colours are always fun, while Easter buns taste best when freshly baked so prepare them on Easter morning.
