With warmer weather comes the anticipation of enjoying outdoor picnics and barbecues on the deck.

We are a little eager with summer just around the corner, so we’ve prepared a few ideas to help  you be the host with the most and keep guests cool and sun safe when outdoor entertaining:

    • Always keep a handy pump pack of sunscreen on hand for guests to use
    • You don’t have to have a pool to keep kids cool - keep a supply of homemade ice pops in the freezer to minimise little ones loading up on sugary drinks on hot afternoons
    • Particular foods help to keep the body cool.  Hot weather favourites such as melon, cucumber, yoghurt, zucchini and tomatoes can be turned into creative snacks and sides including:
      • refreshing salads and salsas
      • sorbets
      • party starters such as homemade tzatziki, hummus and beetroot dips
      • fruit skewers
      • or a fizzy punch
      • Time gatherings  for mid-afternoon to avoid standing next to the barbecue at the hottest time of the day
      • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption as this aggravates dehydration on a hot day; always offer plenty of water and ice to keep drinks chilled
      • Create a shady area for guests to retreat from the sun; some palm trees, a sun umbrella and other clever outdoor solutions will help everyone be more cool and comfortable
      • Who needs a pool?  Hand out water pistols to keep kids cool and entertained
      • A chill out zone indoors is always a good idea for big and little kids to take five; set up a mini home cinema with some beanbags and floor cushions
      • Make sure everyone gets home safely with dedicated drivers or taxis.
